What Is PP405?
PP405 is an investigational topical small molecule — a mitochondrial pyruvate-carrier inhibitor — under third-party clinical development for androgenetic alopecia. The definition
PP405 is a low-molecular-weight chemical entity that inhibits the mitochondrial pyruvate carrier — the protein complex that moves pyruvate from the cell cytosol into mitochondria. In 2026 the World Health Organization INN programme published the proposed international nonproprietary name suvomipic for the compound, classing it explicitly as a mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC) inhibitor.[9]
The compound class originates from University of California research: the patent family covering compositions and methods for modulating hair growth via MPC inhibition names The Regents of the University of California as applicant, and Pelage Pharmaceuticals licensed that intellectual property for clinical development.[7][8][5]

How it is being investigated
The biological rationale is peer-reviewed: hair-follicle stem cells are glycolytic, lactate production gates their activation, and mitochondrial pyruvate-carrier inhibition accelerated the hair cycle in mice — including in alopecia-model systems.[2][3]
The clinical investigation is third-party and early: a completed 78-subject, vehicle-controlled Phase 2a trial in androgenetic alopecia (NCT06393452) with company-reported tolerability, pharmacokinetic and exploratory density findings, and a Phase 3 programme announced from 2026 following a $120M Series B financing.[4][5][6]
Why it remains investigational
PP405 has not been approved for hair loss or any other use. The human evidence is a single company-reported early-phase trial whose findings await peer-reviewed publication and Phase 3 confirmation; no independent replication exists at the last evidence search (2026-08-02). A proposed INN and a registered trial are milestones of process, not evidence of effect. Pelogen™ reflects that status honestly: laboratory and formulation research only.
